The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Climate + Health Excellence (CHEX) Centers award is an institutional research and training opportunity that aims to create new lines of research connecting climate change and human health.
Program Objectives
- Support
institutions already moving towards excellence in climate change and health research
Foster interdisciplinary collaborations in basic, applied, and translational research
Develop innovative training programs for graduate and post-graduate students
Enhance public education or communication on climate and health issues
Project Requirements
- Focus on a core interest linking climate change and
human health that reflects the strengths of the institution
Include interdisciplinary research activities
Incorporate a training grant element (up to 20% of budget)
Feature either education-focused or communication-focused work on Climate + Health

Value added by BWF’s support
Innovation and creativity
Capacity to seed long-term faculty collaborations
Current resources in Climate + Health
Training plan quality- Institutional track record in interdisciplinary
collaboration, research training and science communication/public outreach
